My Story and Giving Back!

I've been asked many times how I came up with the name of my business, "FlutterBy". Well, here's my story. Let me give you some background first...

My dad, the late Ricky C. Patterson, developed diabetes in his mid-thirties. This was (and still is) an aweful disease, in which people did not know much about at that time. He was not aware of how important it was for him to maintain his blood sugar levels and take care of himself, so he neglected taking his insulin and eating right for several years. As a result, his body started to shut down. He started to lose his sight first. Then it all went down hill from there.
After several years of laser eye surgeries and really no improvement, his kidneys began deteriorating and his heart became weak. After having bypass surgery, his kidneys completely failed and was put on dialysis.
He was on the list for a kidney transplant, but we all know how long people wait on those lists...so I decided that I should get tested to see if I could be a match to give him a kidney. The blood work was done in the hospital and showed that my bloodtype was a match! We were both so excited and a bit apprehensive at the same time. The plan was set for me to be admitted into UAB on Wednesday, August 29th, 2001.
Unfortunately, this never happened. My dad passed away, while on the dialysis machine, on Monday, August 27th, 2001. I never got my chance to "give of myself" to him. I really felt that it was, in a way, my fault.

The Story of FlutterBy...
My dad had back problems for years and slept in the livingroom recliner. One night, he was asleep while the rest of us were sitting in the room watching TV. All of a sudden, he started throwing his arms in the air and shaking. We all thought he was having a seizure!
A few minutes later, he looked at us laughing. We asked what he was doing and his reply was, "I dreamed that I was chasing butterflies. I was trying to catch them with a net but they all flew away too fast." We all had a big laugh about it. :)

Two weeks after he passed, my baby sister, Anna, was performing at the BRHS football half time show. This was her freshman year and she was so excited to be part of the band. As we were all sitting in the stands, waiting for the band to start playing, we could only think of our dad. This was such a bitter-sweet moment, as you could imagine.
As soon as the band entered the field, a gorgeous, orange butterfly circled our heads. We noticed that it only circled around us (the family) and then flew out onto the field. We felt as if daddy was giving us a sign that he was fine and that he was watching as well.

After the birth of my oldest daughter, Kylee, I developed a love for photography. I would take pictures of her constantly. I then had, with the help of my sister-in-law, the idea to turn my passion into a business.
I was struggling to come up with a name for the business and was still very heart-broken about the loss of my dad, so I wanted to incorporate something about him in the name of the business. That's when the word "butterfly" came to mind. I didn't really want to call it Butterfly so I thought of a form of that word...FlutterBy! All I did was swap three letters and it made an awesome new word. How appropriate!

Giving back...
So, now that the 6th anniversary of my dad's passing just went by, I wanted to come up with a way to help the memory of him live on. I researched diabetes foundations and have decided to donate a portion of every order I receive to the American Diabetes Association. This is my way of "giving of myself" to my daddy and giving to a great cause.

This is the first newborn I've had in a while. This baby was so easy going. He really enjoyed being undressed! He made quite a mess during his shots, but it didn't matter. We got gorgeous shots!

This was such a gorgeous family! I was so excited when dad wanted to get some shots with his shirt off. (from a photographer's point of view) I've been wanting to do these shots for so long!

We finally got this little guy to go to sleep for some sleeping shots. These are my favorites!

Update on Mini Session Portrait Parties

I've had several people interested in these portrait parties. I've also had questions about doing portrait parties at clothing trunk shows.
Well, I'm very excited to announce that I've just become a rep for a gorgeous childrens clothing line. I'll begin doing my rep work with them this fall. So, if you're interested in the portrait parties, we can also have a trunk of clothing as well. That way, your guests can purchase clothing for their children as well as get portraits. Hostesses can receive credits on clothing and portraits if we include them together!

Mini Session Portrait Parties

It's the HOT thing these days! Mini session portrait parties are a lot like the trunk shows you attend on the weekends. The idea is for a hostess to invite 8-20 guests to her home for 15 minute mini sessions with Amy. Guests pay a small reservation fee for a mini-session sitting, which is for individual subjects only, and are able to purchase mini-session packages.
The hostess will earn print credits good toward her full session based on the orders received from the party. This session can possibly turn into a free session by meeting set sales goals.

Now, you're probably thinking "I can't have portraits done in my home". Yes, you can! All the hostess will need to do is be willing to clear a spot next to a window and coordinate the event. Leave the rest up to me! You'll be amazed at what great images can come from your home. We can also use a spot in your yard, if need be. I can show you some spots that you would never think to use.

I'm certain that these mini sessions will be a big hit! In fact, I am limiting them to 2 a month. So, if you're interested in earning a free session with me as well as print credits toward purchases from your session, email me at flutterbyfoto@charter.net today for more information on hostess benefits. Be aware that these will go fast, so don't hesitate.

My precious nephews!

My sister flew down to visit last week and I finally got to do a short session with my two gorgeous nephews!

Here's Samuel. He's the baby...9 months old now. He's already pulling himself up. I think he's going to be an early walker. Isn't he gorgeous?!

This is Zachary. He is so much fun! My daughter just adores him. I'm sure you can see why. :)

After they got used to me with the camera, they began playing together. It was so sweet just watching them laugh and enjoy each other. They are both very loving. And they both love their mommy very much!

I can't wait to see them again. Maybe next time their dad can come with them and we can do a family session! My favorite!

It seems as though everyone in Alex. City that uses Charter as their ISP still cannot see the new site. I've tried all week to figure out this problem. I just don't know what else to do. I've spoken with Charter several times and they're no help at all. If anyone has any idea of how to fix this problem, I'd really appreciate some help! :)
In the mean time, I'll be updating both sites until this problem is fixed. Just be sure to keep visiting the blog for further updates.

1 year olds galore!

I've had so many sessions for 1 year olds lately. And they've all been little boys, too. Must've been something in the water back then. :)

These two sessions were so much fun! The parents were so easy-going and the little boys were just so pleasant. I could do sessions like this all day long.
